End of World Breastfeeding Week 2010

This morning we attended the Third Annual Prayer Service for World Breastfeeding Week, at the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche.
Our Bishop Victor Galeone, led the prayer service. His 'homily' was absolutely beautiful. I did record it on my iphone but not sure if it will upload it is like 20 minutes.

He talked about nursing in public, how natural breastfeeding is and that mothers should breastfeed anywhere. He talked about how sexualized our breasts have become. He told a story from long ago about a woman going up to recieve Holy Communion her baby began to fuss and she "reverently" lifted her blouse and nursed her sweet baby. He never said at anytime we should cover up or that it was not modest to nurse.

He talked about how Nestle went into the poor countries like Peru over 50 years ago lying to the mothers telling them it was "the best thing for your baby", and how science tries to improve but seems to take a step back.

He shared a sad story about his baby brother that died when he was 11 months old of pneumonia . How back then the doctors would not let his mother near the baby (for fear of contamination) and she wanted to just nurse him. He said his mother said she knows if she could have nursed him he would have lived. It brought back all my experience I went thru in the NICU when Sebastain was born. Just shows the strong instincts a mother has.

I would like to share this scripture he read many of you already know it;

The Psalms read today:
139, 71,

Reading from;
1 Peter 2:1-4

Gospel
Luke 1:46-55

Cantacle~Isaiah 66:10-14a

Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her,
all you who love her;
Exult, exult with her,
all you who were mourning over her!

Oh, that you may suck fully
of the milk of her comfort,
That you may nurse with delight
at her abundant breasts!

For thus says the LORD:
Lo, I will spread properity over her like a river,
and the wealth of the nations like
an overflowing torrent.
As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms,
and fondled in her lap;

As a mother comforts her son,
so will I comfort you;
in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.

When you see this, your heart shall rejoice,
and your bodies fourish like the grass.

  1. Lovely! I recognize a few faces from CC and POP. I love Bishop G., he is amazing and humble and can stir the heart with his stories. I am glad you are having this time with him. I am sure he influences your children greatly. Not everyone has the chance to be so close to their bishop.

    I will try to listen to the recording.
    Thank you for your example.
    Love Ya
